WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Dental Implants are a great alternative to the traditional bridges or dentures when replacing missing teeth. Unlike bridge or dentures which can affect the adjacent teeth over time, teeth implants are freestanding and so may not lead to problems with your other teeth.

ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you have one or more teeth that are missing and are looking to replace them with implants your dentist will evaluate if you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure. He/She will look at the overall condition of your other teeth and gums, your oral hygiene, your health and any medical conditions or medications you take. They will also check the ability of your jaw to support an implant. If your bone is not thick enough, a bone graft may be recommended prior to having the implant(s).

DENTAL IMPLANTS PROCEDURE

Once it is determined you are a good candidate for implants the process can begin. An oral surgeon, periodontist or general dentist will place the implant body via a minor surgical procedure. The body resembles a small post and it is below your gums. Following the placement, the site needs to heal for approximately 4-6 months. During this time you will not be able to see the implant. Once it is healed a crown may be attached the implant with a screw or cement by your dentist. It may seem like a long time before you have a finished product but the benefits and esthetics far outweigh the length of treatment for most patients.
